Clippers’ grad Cheverie earns another WCHA honour

For the fourth time this season, Denver goaltender and Nanaimo Clippers grad Marc Cheverie has been named the Red Baron WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, this time for his outstanding play in a Feb. 12-13 conference sweep of visiting Minnesota.

Cheverie also earned the weekly honor on Oct. 27, Nov. 24 and Feb. 2. The Cole Harbour, N.S. product, a 2006 draftee of the NHL’s Florida Panthers, led the Pioneers to 3-1 and 5-1 wins over the Gophers last weekend as Denver moved into first place in the WCHA with 32 points.

He stopped 76 of 78 shots on goal in the two-game series for a .974 saves percentage with four shutout periods. The only two goals he allowed were 6-on-5 and 5-on-4, and he lost both shutouts in the last 1:38 of each contest. In four games against the Gophers this season, Cheverie posted a 4-0 mark with a 0.50 GAA and .986 Sv% with two shutouts as DU swept the four games for the first time in school history.

Cheverie leads the WCHA overall in goals-against average (1.88), saves percentage (.939) and shutouts (6). He also leads the nation in save-percentage and shutouts, and is second in goals-against average.

No. 2 Denver hosts Michigan Tech on Feb. 19-20.
