Clippers top Bulldogs with perfect power play

The Nanaimo Clippers went 4-4 on the power play Friday night and added another goal at even strength in a 5-2 home win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

Kyle Kramer scored two of the Clips' man-advantage goals in the first including the decisive third tally and Nanaimo took a 3-0 edge after 20 minutes. Artsiom Kalashnikov got the 'Dogs on the board in the second but Luke Gordon restored the Clippers' three-goal advantage heading into the third.

Nanaimo's Jesse Neher added the fourth power-play goal of the night in the final frame and Walker Hyland scored the final goal of the game for Alberni Valley. Billy Faust made 31 saves for the win.

Goals in the first and late in the third allowed the Salmon Arm SilverBacks to force OT in Vernon where Devin Muller got the winner with two seconds left in the first OT period. Darren Nowick had both Vipers goals in the second period but it was Sean Flanagan's power-play goal in the final minute that put the game into extra time.

The Cowichan Valley Capitals used a three-goal first period and held off the Victoria Grizzlies for a 6-2 win. Mikael Jung scored shorthanded and at even strength while Jake Charles got a power-play goal for the Caps to put them up 3-0 after one. It got to be 5-0 before Wade Murphy and Sean Robertson scored for the Grizz in the second. Brandon Mistal had an empty-netter.

A four-point night from Powell River Kings defenceman Craig Dalrymple was topped by a five-point night by his teammate Evan Richardson as the Kings defeated the Surrey Eagles 7-1. Dalrymple and Richardson each had a goal and set up three and four others respectively with the Kings going 5-9 on the man-advantage. Linden Saip had the lone Eagles goal in the third.

Westside Warriors defenceman and captain Izaak Berglund had three assists as the Tribe down the Trail Smoke Eaters 4-1. After a scoreless first, Trail opened the scoring on Clayton Chessa's goal early in the second but Richard Vanderhoek tied it late in the period. Westside scored three in the third including Vanderhoek's second of the night.

In Chilliwack, the Penticton Vees earned a 5-4 road win over the Chiefs with a four-goal second period paving the way. Penticton's Ryan Reilly and Chilliwack's David Bondra exchanged first-period goals before the Vees scored three straight to begin the second. Bondra and Malcolm Gould got the Chiefs back within one but Mark McLellan's first of the season proved the winner late in the second.

Prince George Spruce Kings goalie Kirk Thompson took 1st Star honours but it was the Merritt Centennials skating away with a 3-2 win. Silvan Harper scored a pair in the first fo the visiting Cents and Paul De Jersey scored in the second for PG. Reece Willcox got the insurance goal 5:42 into the third and Chase Golightly scored late for the Spruce Kings.

The Langley Rivermen scored twice by 7:25 of the first and chased Cole Huggins from the Coquitlam Express crease on their way to a 5-2 win. Langley built a 4-0 lead early in the third including a natural hat trick from Mike Tebbutt before Cody Michelle potted a pair for the Express. Mario Puskarich had an empty-netter to seal the deal.
