Coastal Weekend Update

It was a busy night in the BCHL Friday with no less than eight games on the schedule and all teams in action.  When the final buzzer went, there were some big changes in the division and conference standings.

On the Mainland, there's a new leader atop the standings as the Langley Chiefs defeated the Powell River Kings 4-1 at the Powell River Recreation Complex in the first of a two-game series.  The win lifts the Chiefs one point ahead of the Kings in the Mainland standings.  Andrew Walsh earned first-star honours with a 38 save performance.  The two teams face off again tonight at the Recreation Complex at 7:30pm.

The Burnaby Express picked up their first win of the season as the zipped across town and downed the hometown Surrey Eagles 8-3 at the South Surrey Arena.  Garrick Perry led the way offensively as he scored once and added three assists while John Bokla and Simon Denis each scored twice for the Express.  The two teams meet again tonight – this time in Burnaby.  Game time is 7:30pm.

Over on the Island, the Nanaimo Clippers were 5-3 winners over the Victoria Grizzlies in the BCHL's Game of the Week.  The hometown Clippers pulled themselves to within a single point of the Division leading Grizzlies with the win.  Russell Goodman scored twice for the Clippers and Evan Smith turned aside 38 of 41 shots to earn the win in goal.

In Cowichan Valley, the Capitals overcame a 1-0 first period deficit to defeat the visiting Alberni Valley Bulldogs 2-1.   Brett Corcoran was in on both Cowichan Valley goals scoring once and adding a single assist.  Chris Rawlings was good on 29 of 30 shots in the Capitals' net to record the victory.
