Connor commits to Spartans

Still only 17 years old, Chilliwack Chiefs defenceman Powell Connor is already closing in on 100 career BCHL games.

Now slated to attend Michigan State University to play for the Spartans, the 6-foot-1, 179-pound blueliner will be a well-seasoned prospect by the time heads of to the NCAA in 2019-20.

Connor, a native of Vernon, has two goals and 19 assists this season after posting 3-13-16 in his rookie campaign last year. He has been listed by NHL Central Scouting at various times earlier this season as well.

At Michigan State, Connor will join a Spartans program that competes in the NCAA’s Big 10 conference along with Notre Dame, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin.

Former BCHLers Taro Hirose, Jake Smith and Damian Chrcek are on the Spartans roster this season. Connor’s Chiefs teammate Skyler Brind’Amour is also committed to Michigan State for 2019-20.

Michigan State is located in East Lansing, Michigan and the team’s first-year head coach is Spartans alum and former NHLer Danton Cole.
