Contests tight all around in a six-pack of Thursday games

On a night where five of six games were decided by one goal, the closest contest was in Victoria where the Grizzlies got the winner from Michael Colantone in the last minute of double overtime in a 3-2 win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

Victoria opened the scoring on a power play goal from Taylor Pernerowski at 5:24 of the first in what was the second of three games the teams play against each other this week. The game remained 1-0 until late in the second when the Caps' Jordan Grant netted the equalizer.

The Grizzlies took the lead on Wade Murphy's tally less than five minutes into the third but Cowichan Valley forced overtime, and thereby earned a point, as Chase Kaiser scored with just more than six minutes remaining.

Colantone's winner came at 4:17 of the second OT and was set up by Nick Buchanan and goalie Matt Ginn who turned aside 44 shots for the win and first-star honours.

Another double-overtime game happened in Vernon as the Vipers hosted the Salmon Arm SilverBacks in the second game of a home-and-home set. Vernon scored halfway into the first to open scoring on Aaron Hadley's marker but Salmon Arm go the next two with Jarryd Ten Vaanholt setting up the first one and scoring the next. Marcus Basara's goal just past the midway point of the second led to overtime where David Killip ended it.

The other overtime game of the night was in Surrey where the Eagles and Nanaimo Clippers exchanged goals throughout the game. Surrey's Tyler Morley scored first and Dale Hunt would later add two but Nanaimo's Jesse Ursic scored early in the third to tie the game 3-3. Steve Koshey clinched it for Surrey in the final minute of four-on-four overtime.

Another game involving teams in the second game of a home-and-home set went in Quesnel as the Millionaires got a goal from Derek Huisman in the first period and made it stand up for a 1-0 win over the Prince George Spruce Kings. Goalie Adam Harris was perfect on 35 shots to earn the shutout.

In Trail, the Smoke Eaters scored three times in the first 10 minutes and then leaned heavily on goalie Kiefer Smiley to claim a 3-2 win over the visiting Merritt Centennials. Merritt threw all they had at Smiley but the netminder stopped 49 of 51 shots to earn the win and first star.

The only game that wasn't decided by one goal was in Langley where the Chiefs took a 4-2 win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Langley built up a 3-0 lead by the midway point of the third but a late 'Dogs rally made it 3-2 before Darnell Dyck got the insurance marker late to seal the win. Wyatt Galley made 28 saves for the Chiefs to earn first star.
