Eagles don purple in fundraising campaign against drunk driving

The Surrey Eagles put their efforts behind a touching cause this weekend and raised more than $6,000 for their Back the Bus Campaign

Alexa Middelaer’s story is one which touched everyone. The 4-year-old was killed by a drunk driver while feeding a horse in Ladner in 2008. Since then new drunk driving laws have been passed in our Province and now another pillar to deter drinking and driving is in motion.

Sunday at South Surrey Arena 1,240 Surrey Eagles fans community members came out to support the Back the Bus campaign to raise funds to purchase four mobile investigation units in Alexa’s honour. These mobile labs will provide a visible deterrent for drunk drivers, state-of-the-art tools to aid Crown Counsel investigations, and help save lives on BC roads.

Through a raffle, 50/50, game tickets, and purple bracelet sales over $3,000 was raised which was matched by local community Scotiabank branches. Thank you to everyone for supporting your community.

Alexa's mother Laurel has been front and center throughout this fundraising effort.

“If we can obtain these buses, our police will be fully equipped to investigate the complex accident scenes in which alcohol has been a factor. As a result, the cost of pursuing charges against drunk drivers will be greatly reduced, and – most importantly – many, many lives will be saved”.

Players on the Surrey Eagles were excited to be a part of the efforts as all sported purple bracelets and used purple stick tape during the game. Purple was Alexa’s favourite colour and all mobile investigation units will be decked in the colour.
