Eagles down Nanaimo, push lead in Coastal Conference to three points

Scoring a pair of goals each period, including Sean McGovern's tally 23 seconds into the game, helped the Surrey Eagles to a 6-3 win over the visiting Nanaimo Clippers.

Andrew Gladiuk tied the game for the Clips just past the four-minute mark of the opening frame but Robert Lindores restored the Surrey lead. In the second, goals by Tyler Morley and Alex Hagen put the Eagles up three and that was enough for the win.

Surrey increased their lead atop the Coastal standings to three points over the Powell River Kings with the win. Nanaimo is now 13 points back of Coquitlam for fourth place with seven games left.

In Cowichan Valley, the Capitals survived a late charge by the Vernon Vipers to take a 6-4 win. Leading 5-2 with less than three minutes left, the Caps saw Vernon get goals from Aaron Hadley and John Knisley to make it a one-goal game. Matt Brown's empty-net goal with a second left sealed it.

The Langley Rivermen and Victoria Grizzlies traded goals through the first 40 minutes but it was Cam Lawson's unassisted effort in the third that won in 4-3 for Victoria. Coltyn Hansen had a goal and an assist for the Grizz while Austin Plevy had the same for Langley.

Brett McKinnon scored 11 seconds into the game for the Westside Warriors but it was the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings that got four unanswered goals in response to win it 4-1. Leo Fitzgerald tied the game in the second with Michael Colantone, Chase Golightly and Jarryd Ten Vaanholt scoring in the third.

The Coquitlam Express trailed the Alberni Valley Bulldogs after one but scored twice in the second and four times in the third to win 7-4. Alex Petan opened the scoring for the Express before Yan Kalashnikov and Walker Hyland put the 'Dogs up after 20 minutes. Petan got his second of the game in the second to put his team ahead and Alex Kerfoot added a pair in the third.

In Merritt, the Centennials peppered Trail's Lyndon Stanwood with 51 shots in a 7-2 win over the Smoke Eaters. Merritt scored three time in the first and got four in the second including a pair by Silvan Harper. Garrett McMullen got Trail on the board in the middle frame and Clayton McEwan scored early in third but that was all the scoring.
