Huggins hangs tight for first career BCHL shutout

In just his second game with the Coquitlam Express, goalie Cole Huggins stopped all 38 shots that came his way in a 2-0 win over the Langley Rivermen.

The only scoring of the game came in a 2:22 span of the second period as Connor Redmond and Brady Shaw tallied for Coquitlam.

Langley fired 19 shots on net in the third but couldn't beat Huggins who earned his 1st Star and the first shutout of his BCHL career.

The Penticton Vees were without seven of their players due to various commitments to the World Junior A Challenge but still managed a 4-2 win over the Westside Warriors. The game was 2-2 past the midway point of the third when Alex Jewell potted the winner unassisted and Joey Benik added a shorthanded empty-netter.

In Powell River, the Cowichan Valley Capitals took a 2-1 lead into the third but the home side tied it on a Brendan Forbes power-play marker early in the final frame. Just eight seconds into the second overtime, Daniel Schuler won it for Powell River.

The Nanaimo Clippers had a five-game win streak snapped by the visiting Alberni Valley Bulldogs who claimed a 3-2 win on Mike Puddifant's third-period winner. The teams traded goals throughout the game after Chase Van Allen's opener for the Bulldogs. David Iacono tied it for the Clips in the third before Puddifant's goal.

A three-goal first period was enough for the Vernon Vipers in a 4-2 win on the road against the Trail Smoke Eaters. Michael Zalewski, Darren Nowick and Jedd Soleway tallied in the first 20 minute but Garrett McMullen and Marley Keca got Trail back with a goal in the second. Adam Tambellini's third-period goal sealed it.

In Chilliwack, Kirk Thompson made 42 saves for the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings but a double-overtime, penalty-shot goal by Trevor Hills won it for the Chiefs. Paul De Jersey opened the scoring and also forced OT with a late third-period goal. David Bondra was 1st Star with a goal and assist.

The Surrey Eagles scored the first three goals of the game before the Victoria Grizzlies came back with a pair in the second. Demico Hannoun scored the insurance goal early in the second which was big as Sean Robertson tallied shortly after but the Grizz got no closer.

In Merritt, the Centennials scored a goal each period and held the Salmon Arm SilverBacks scoreless after the first in a 3-2 win. Chad Brears scored the tying goal in the second and the winner late in the third for Merritt.
