Kings’ McLeod commits to Alaska-Anchorage

PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The Prince George Spruce Kings Junior A Hockey Club of the British Columbia Hockey League is pleased to announce that defenceman, Wes McLeod has committed to a four year scholarship at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Currently playing in his second season with the Prince George Spruce Kings, Wes McLeod has picked up a goal and ten helpers through 16 games with 24 penalty minutes.

McLeod was an unheralded Midget AAA player in Kamloops before being identified by the Prince George Spruce Kings. In two years he has developed into an elite defenceman in the British Columbia Hockey League and was recently listed on the NHL Central Scouting Watch List for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

With the commitment to play for the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in 2009/10, McLeod’s focus remains on the Prince George Spruce Kings and helping his current team be as successful as possible.

“This is a dream come true,” said Wes McLeod. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity to take my game to the next level. I plan on challenging myself to play at my highest level. I want to help make this season as successful as possible, not just for me, but for my teammates who have been very supportive and the team that has helped me achieve this.”

“We are extremely proud as an organization that Wes McLeod has been able to secure a NCAA scholarship,” said Mike Hawes, Spruce Kings director of player development. “Wes is a player that has come in and worked extremely hard to develop into a player capable of playing at the next level.”

“We are glad that players like Wes are making the Spruce Kings a destination of choice to bigger and better things,” continues Hawes. “Wes McLeod is a shining example of what the Spruce Kings organization can do to help a player achieve more.”

Wes McLeod becomes the second player to commit to a NCAA Division I school this year and is the third committed player on the team’s roster this season.
