Kings rearguard Yee commits to UBC Thunderbirds

The Powell River Kings are proud to announce that Jason Yee has committed to the University of British Columbia to play for the Thunderbirds this upcoming September.

Yee joined the green and gold at the beginning of the 2008-09 season and immediately impressed coaches and fans with his hard work ethic defending the blueline. Yee consistently maintained his strong composure on the ice and developed into a dependable leader over his years as a King.

Kings' head coach and general manager Kent Lewis is pleased to see the defenceman he coached for three seasons head off to the next level.

“Jason Yee was a great ambassador for Powell River both on and off the ice,” said Lewis. “He was very involved with the community and a leader in the off-ice development for Powell River’s minor hockey. UBC is getting a great individual and a strong defenceman who will be an incredible asset to their program.”

A 6-foot, 175-pound Victoria native, Yee played three full seasons in the BCHL with the Kings and parts of two others with the Victoria Grizzlies. He developed a reputation as a shutdown defenceman while tallying five goals and 35 assists in his Junior A career.

Yee chose UBC for the established Thunderbird hockey program as well as its acclaimed department of human kinectics. Jason plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology and eventually move on to pursue a Masters in exercise physiology.

The 20-year-old will be joining fellow teammate Ben Schmidt as a UBC Thunderbird and he looks forward to continuing to train, develop his defensive skills and create new connections in the hockey community.
