Molle named as Alaska-Fairbanks’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Former Penticton Vees defenceman Byrant Molle of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks has been designated as the team's 2011 Central Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Molle, a senior, has kept a 3.94 grade-point average while studying civil engineering. The Anchorage, AK native also volunteers his time with his teammates for such activites as Sports Night at the school's Denali Center and reading to kids in Fairbanks-area schools.

On the ice, Molle is an alternate captain and has a goal and four assists in 36 games this year. As a Vee, Molle registerd two goals and 13 assists while picking up 89 penalty minutes in 2006-07.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound rearguard is one of 11 candidates for the CCHA award that will be presented by RBC Financial Group on March 17. He is also one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award to be announced next month.

Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 through the fall term of the selection year to be eligible for CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which is selected by the 11 faculty representatives.
