NCAA Roundup: BCHLers big in conference tourney action

News and highlights from around NCAA Division I Hockey featuring British Columbia Hockey League grads for the weekend of March 6th to 8th:

CCHA Tournament — Ohio State vs. Bowling Green

On Friday, Nanaimo Clippers graduate Erick Belanger assisted on a pair of Buckeyes goals en route to a 5-4 win over Bowling Green. Anight later it was Vees alum Zac Dalpe playing set-up man, picking up a pair of helpers while Vernon Vipers grad Hunter Bishop notched a single assist in a 6-1 victory. Ohio State will now travel to Alaska-Anchorage for its second round series.

CCHA Tournament — Northern Michigan vs. Michigan State

Blake Cosgrove and Derek May combined to score three-points in Northern Michigan's series clinching win over Michigan State. Alberni Valley Bulldogs grad Brian Sewart picked up the victories in net in both games. Northern will now travel to Miami-Ohio for its second round series.

ECAC Tournament — Union College vs. Clarkson

Union sophomore and Powell River grad Adam Preszniuk scored one goal and added two assists on Friday and another two points on Saturday to lead his team to a sweep over Clarkson. Vees alum Corey Milan stopped a total of 45 shots during the series. Union will now travel to Princeton for its second round series.

ECAC Tournament — Quinnipiac vs. Colgate

Merritt Centennials grad Brandon Wong was the hero in Quinnipiac's three-game series win over Colgate. Wong scored overtime goals in games 1 and 3 to clinch the victory, while former Cents teammate Bryan Leitch scored once and added two assists in the series. Colgate freshman and Penticton Vees alum Austin Smith had a huge games in Colgate's win on Saturday, netting a hat trick and assisting on another goal. Quinnipiac advances to face St. Lawerence in the second round.

ECAC Tournament — Brown vs. Harvard

BCHL grads Harry Zolnierczyk (Alberni Valley) and Aaron Volpatti (Vernon) combined to lead Brown to a first-round sweep over Harvard. Zolnierczyk scored the lone goal in a 1-0 Bears win on Friday while Volpatti scored and assisted once in a 2-0 win a night later. Brown advances to face Yale in the second round.
