NCAA Roundup: Nesterenko, Evans earn Hockey East awards

This week, two BCHL alums earned awards in Hockey East, including Player of the Week and top rookie honours.

Hockey East Player of the Week

Jonny Evans – Junior – University of Connecticut (Powell River Kings)

Evans had four points in a pair of wins over New Hampshire last weekend. On Friday, he had a goal and an assist as the Huskies won in overtime, 6-5. On Saturday, Evans scored twice, including a power-play goal, as UConn posted an 8-3 win for a weekend sweep. Evans now has a point in nine of 11 games this season and leads the team in scoring (6G, 7A) with four multi-point outings.

The native of Delta, B.C. played four full seasons with the Kings from 2014-2018, totaling 190 points in 194 regular-season games throughout his career. His best year came in 2016-17 when he put up 78 points to finish fifth in league scoring.

Hockey East Rookie of the Week

Nikita Nesterenko – Freshman – Boston College (Chilliwack Chiefs)

Nesterenko helped the Eagles move to 8-2-0 on the season with a goal and an assist Sunday night in a 5-3 win at Merrimack. He scored a shorthanded tally 55 seconds into the second period before assisting on the game-winning goal with just four minute left in regulation. He now has a point in seven of 10 games.

The 19-year-old led the Chiefs in scoring last year in his lone season in the league and finished third among all rookies with 56 points in 56 games.
