NCAA Roundup: Oct. 31

In this week’s NCAA Roundup, presented by CWENCH Hydration, we have both weekly and monthly award winners to recognize with seven different league alumni taking home honours.

ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month/Goaltender of the Week

Ethan Langenegger – Graduate – Clarkson University (Salmon Arm Silverbacks)

Langenegger posted a 5-1-0 record for the Golden Knights in October. The former Salmon Arm Silverback played a pivotal role in giving Clarkson their best start (5-2-0) since the 2019-20 season. The 2000-born netminder made 148 saves this month. His 1.65 goals-against average and .937 save percentage both currently stand as the best in ECAC Hockey.

The Kamloops, B.C. product played two seasons with the Silverbacks from 2018 to 2020, appearing in 80 games. In his final year with the team, he posted a record of 23-15-3, a .908 save percentage, a 2.79 goals-against average and three shutouts.

ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week

Brett Chorske – Senior – Colgate University (Wenatchee Wild)

Chorske recorded three goals and an assist for the Raiders in a weekend sweep of the Tigers at Rochester Institute of Technology. The senior forward also finished the weekend with a plus-5 rating.

Chorske played the 2018-19 campaign with the Wenatchee Wild, finishing in a tie for second in team scoring with 39 points in 58 games.

CCHA Defenceman of the Month

Mason Poolman – Sophomore – University of St. Thomas (Penticton Vees)

Poolman paced CCHA blueliners in goals (three) and points (five) in October, averaging a point per game for the Tommies. Recording one game-winning goal, he had 10 shots and four blocks defensively. His month was highlighted by a two-goal, one-assist outing against Vermont on Oct. 11 when he led St. Thomas to a 5-5 come-from-behind tie.

The 2002-born defender played two seasons with Penticton from 2021 to 2023, helping the team win back-to-back Fred Page Cup championships. He finished his tenure in the league with 30 points in 85 regular-season games and another 10 in 24 postseason contests.

CCHA Rookie of the Month

Luke Ashton (D) – Freshman – Minnesota State University (Vernon/Langley)

Ashton recorded four points (one goal, three assists) across eight October games for the Mavericks, posting a CCHA-best plus-8 rating, with 14 shots on goal and 13 blocks defensively. He scored his first collegiate goal in his first game at Michigan on Oct. 4 before adding his first NCAA assist the same night.

The North Vancouver, B.C. product played three seasons in the BCHL with the Vernon Vipers and Langley Rivermen. His breakout season came during his lone season in Langley last year where he led all blueliners with 18 goals and finished with 36 points. In June, he was selected in the sixth round by the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

Atlantic Hockey Defenceman of the Week

Michael Craig – Sophomore – Robert Morris University (Nanaimo Clippers)

Craig had a productive weekend, collecting two goals and two assists for four points in RMU’s two-game weekend series against Niagara. After picking up an assist in Friday night’s contest, Craig put together a three-point game on Saturday. With his team trailing 4-2, Craig scored a pair of third-period goals to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Colonials would later earn the extra point in the shootout. Craig also registered a first-period assist.

The 22-year-old competed with the Nanaimo Clippers for three seasons from 2020 to 2023, acting as team captain his final year with the team. Over his BCHL career, he collected 82 points in 110 games.

Hockey East Rookie of the Week

WIll Elger (F) – Freshman – Providence College (Alberni Valley Bulldogs)

Elger scored his first collegiate goal on Friday night in a 3-2 overtime win at Vermont and followed up with another goal on Saturday in a 4-4 tie between the Friars and Catamounts. Elger finished the weekend with two goals, four shots on goal and a plus-two rating.

The 2004-born forward played the 2022-23 season with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, finishing his lone BCHL campaign with 47 points in 52 regular-season games and another 16 in 19 playoff games, helping the Bulldogs reach the league championship series for the first time in franchise history.

NCHC Defenceman of the Week

Josh Zinger – Junior – St. Cloud State University (Salmon Arm Silverbacks)

Zinger had a breakout weekend for the Huskies, chipping in three points from the blueline in a sweep of Augustana. The Northern Michigan transfer recorded his first points at SCSU, while scoring a goal both nights. In Friday’s 4-3 victory, Zinger had the primary assist on the Huskies’ first goal to tie the game, then scored their second goal late in the first frame to knot the game at 2-2. A night later, he broke a 1-1 tie with a blast from the blue line that was the game-winner in a 2-1 victory.

The 23-year-old from Red Deer, Alta. played 13 games for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks to start the 2019-20 season and had two goals and an assist before being traded to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). He also spent time with the Brooks Bandits during the 2021-22 campaign while they were a part of the AJHL.
