New program offers head-start to those studying for SATs

The Langley Chiefs helped develop it but a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) study training program starting in February 2011 will benefit more than just hockey players.

When the team was still in Chilliwack, Chiefs academic advisor Ross Beebe saw a need for players to have support in preparing for the exam, as passing it is mandatory to attend university in the United States.

After more than two years of work, an online study guide will be available for athletes in the BCHL and anywhere to sign up.

“With kids doing (studies) at home, there's no pressure and not just kids in Langley can take it,” says Beebe. “From Trail to Powell River, anyone can sign up. And it's for anyone who wants to go to school in the States, not just hockey players.”

The module is based out of the Langley Education Centre (LEC) and staff there are available to help in person or on the phone. The program is meant for Grade 11 and 12 students and is focused on reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing skill and academic Grade 11 math which are the core areas of the SAT. Phone or online access to instructors is provided.

“Now we've done something I think is a win-win for everybody,” says Beebe. “I've talked with different major midget coaches and the university coaches themselves and they're excited because it will help kids get better marks.”

Registration is now underway and there is no tuition fee but a $15 student fee applies. Online prep starts February 1 and an online orientation is offered. For details, call Lyn at the LEC at 604-534-7155.
