Hammond has big week, nets eight points and POW award

Cowichan Valley Capitals forward Mike Hammond has been named the British Columbia Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 2, the league announced Tuesday.

Hammond notched eight points in four games and pushed himself into a tie for the BCHL scoring lead while helping his team to seven of a possible eight points.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound winger began the week scoring the double-overtime winner against his hometown Victoria Grizzlies and went on to further vex the Grizz, picking up three more points against them including two assists in a 3-2 regulation win New Year's Eve.

Hammond capped things off with a three-point showing in the Caps' 6-4 road win over the Coquitlam Express Sunday. He totalled two goals and six assists for the week, giving him 63 points on the season which ties him with Surrey's Brad McGowan for most in the league.

Honourable mentions this week go to Cowichan Valley winger Jordan Grant (four games, seven points), Langley forward Kody Dhaliwal (two games, two GWG, four points) and Victoria goalie Matt Ginn (three games, 1-1-1 record, 102 saves on 110 shots for a .927 save percentage).
