Nikkel to play for Lethbridge

ANikkelHe got to wear the ‘C’ and led his team to the postseason in his final year of junior hockey and now Ayrton Nikkel hopes to add to that resume in university hockey.

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks leader from last season is now taking his game to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level where he’ll play for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns starting this fall.

Nikkel came to the ‘Backs after a taste of pro hockey in the ECHL with the Allen Americans. He played 26 games with Salmon Arm, registering six assists and 45 penalty minutes. Prior to last season, the Kelowna, B.C. native spent four seasons in the WHL with Saskatoon, Brandon, Everett and Swift Current.

At Lethbridge, Nikkel will join Langley Rivermen alum Torrin White who committed there in the spring.

The Pronghorns compete in the CIS Canada West division against schools such as Alberta, UBC, Calgary, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
