Short works overtime to lead Vipers past Penticton

Rob Short broke a 1-1 deadlock at the 2:30 mark of overtime to give the Vernon Vipers a road win at Penticton on Friday night. With the victory, the Vipers ties the season series between the teams at one apiece and move to within two points of the Vees with three games in hand.

Mike Collins opened the scoring midway through the second period, putting Vernon ahead at even strength on a goal assisted by Jonathan Milhouse and Braden Pimm.

Alex Szczechura tied the game for the Vees with 4:39 remaining in the second period on a set-up from Joey Holka, which sent the game to overtime and set the stage for Short's winner.

Vipers netminder Graeme Gordon was named the game's second star, stopping 23 shots in the win, while Penticton's Sean Bonar was an unlucky loser in a 24-save effort.

Vernon and the Vees are both back in action on Saturday, with the Vipers hosting the Cowichan Valley Capitals at the Wesbild Centre while the Vees remain on home ice with the Merritt Centennials set to come to town.
