Vees take care of business, win Fred Page Cup in four games over Kings

The truth is that the 2012 Fred Page Cup was a much closer affair than the 4-0 series score would indicate but still, the Penticton Vees took the minimum number of games to get past the Powell River Kings.

Cohen Adair cut into Pentcton's 2-0 lead with a power-play goal at 12:46 of the second but any momentum was short lived as Curtis Loik replied for the Vees 26 seconds later.

Powell River outshot the Vees 13-4 in the third period and scored the only goal of the final frame on Matt Scarth's third of the postseason. But Chad Katunar turned aside the other dozen shots in the period and stopped 29 in the game to earn his second 1st Star nod of the Finals.

There was some controversy in the dying seconds as the Kings thought they had found the equalizer but the goal was disallowed.

Each of the last three games of the Finals were one-goal games including Tuesday's 4-3 overtime victory for Penticton.

For Penticton, they maintain the Interior's dominance of the BCHL as the Fred Page Cup has gone to that conference for a fifth-straight year. That run includes Penticton's last win in 2008 and then three in a row by the Vernon Vipers.

The Vees now await the winner of the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Enerflex Cup. Currently, the Brooks Bandits and Fort McMurray Oil Barons are tied 2-2 in their best-of-seven set. The winner of the AJHL will host the opener of the Doyle Cup which is slated for April 20.
