Warriors’ Ellis commits to scholarship at Merrimack College

Brendan Ellis, a rock all season on the blueline for the Westside Warriors, has secured a scholarship at Merrimack College, an NCAA Division One school near Boston, Massachusetts.

“We are excited as an organization that Brendan was able to receive a scholarship to a well established program like Merrimack College,” said Warriors head coach Darren Yopyk. “Elly has been a great member of this organization and community for a long time. He has worked hard to earn this opportunity, and we are excited to be a part of him reaching one of his many lifetime goals.”

Yopyk himself has a Merrimack connection, as he was an assistant coach at the school prior to joining the Warriors organization earlier this year.

Ellis has been Yopyk’s go-to guy on defence all season. The 20-year old quarterbacks the team's power play, kills penalties and is often matched against the opponent’s top line. Ellis stands six-foot-two, weighs 206 pounds and hails from Kelowna.

He has six goals and 18 points in 17 games this season, which puts him third amongst all defencemen in the British Columbia Hockey League.

“We know Brendan will continue to be successful on the ice, in the classroom, and in the community,” added Yopyk. “He will be an excellent addition not only to the Hockey Program, but to Merrimack College as a whole. Congratulations Brendan.”
