Zajac is new Devils consecutive-games-played leader

New Jersey Devils forward Travis Zajac, a Salmon Arm SilverBacks alum, celebrated St. Patrick's Day by setting a new franchise record. The Winnipeg native passed rugged former defenceman Ken Daneyko Thursday night when he played his 389th consecutive game.

The Devils lost 3-1 to the Senators but have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL lately and recently went above the .500 mark and continue to make a push for the postseason after a dismal start.

Zajac had five shots on goal in 19:30 of icetime but was held scoreless in the contest. He was robbed by Senators netminder Curtis McElhinney who made a big stick save on him in the second period.

Zajac began his streak Oct. 26, 2006 during his rookie season with the Devils.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder was taken in the first round, 20th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. In two seasons with the SilverBacks, he scored 59 goals and 105 assists in 108 games. He then played two years at the University of North Dakota before joining the Devils system.
