Zengerle the first to hit 50 points as SilverBacks top Trail

Salmon Arm SilverBacks forward Mark Zengerle became the first BCHL player to reach the 50-point plateau on Friday, assisting on three of his team's goals in a 6-2 road win over the Trail Smoke Eaters.

The SilverBacks jumped on their hosts in the first period with a trio of goals. Tyler Gubbb opened the scoring at the 7:08 mark of the opening frame off a feed from Zengerle, and scored his second of the night five minutes later. Cory Chakeen rounded out the scoring in the opening 20 minutes after being set up by bobby Lipsett.

Second period goals from Greg Noyes and Devin Gannon extended the Salmon Arm lead to five in the second period. Nick Sandor put Trail on the board with six seconds remaining in the second with a power-play marker, but the Smoke Eaters would pull no closer. Josh Manson and Scott Jacklin traded goals in the third period to round out the scoring.

Despite the lopsided score, the Smoke Eaters did manage to outshoot their visitors by a 36-35 margin. Tony Ierfino stood tall in net for Salmon Arm with a 34-save effort while Garrett Beckwith allowed six goals in a losing effort.

Gubb, Gannon and Jacklin were named the game's three stars.

Trail will have their shot at revenge on Saturday when the team's wrap their two-game weekend series at the Cominco Arena. Faceoff is set for 7:30 PM.
