Brossoit’s 35 saves in shutout lead Cowichan Valley past Express

Cowichan Valley Capitals netminder Laurent Brossoit picked up his first British Columbia Hockey League shutout on Saturday night, turning aside 35 shots in a 3-0 home ice victory over the Burnaby Express.

Mike Hammond gaves the Capitals an early lead, taking a feed from Shayne Taker and beating Express starter Harrison May just 1:20 into the first period.

Nick Anderson and Joey Massingham supplied the rest of the offence in the second period, with Anderson striking at the 6:09 mark before the Cowichan Valley captain put the game away on a shorthanded effort late in the period. Taker and Hammond both ended the night with two points for the Capitals.

Brossoit held Burnaby to a 0-for-7 mark on the power-play and was particularly sharp during a 20-save third period. May, meanwhile, turned aside 25 shots in the loss.

Burnaby will look to conclude their three-game Vancouver Island road swing with their first win on Sunday when they visit Alberni Valley, while the Capitals make the trip to Nanaimo for a matinee encounter with the Clippers.
