Horcoff, 1986-87 Richmond Sockeyes to be inducted into BC Hockey Hall of Fame

On July 12, the British Columbia Hockey Hall of Fame (BCHHoF) will honour BCHL alumnus Shawn Horcoff, as well as the 1986-87 Richmond Sockeyes, as part of their 2025 induction class.

“All of these great hockey people honoured the game in our province and now it’s time to honour them,” said Jim Hughson, chair of the BCHHoF.

Born in Trail, B.C. and raised in Castlegar, Horcoff played 1,008 regular season NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks after being selected in the fourth round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He helped the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2005-06.

Horcoff also represented Canada internationally three times at the World Championships, winning gold in Helsinki, Finland in 2003 and Prague, Czechia in 2004, also earning a silver medal in Bern, Switzerland in 2009.

Prior to his professional career, he played two seasons with the Trail Smoke Eaters when they were part of the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League, then suited up for one BCHL season with the Chilliwack Chiefs in 1995-96 where he piled up a league-high 145 points in 58 games and was voted as the co-winner of the Vern Dye Memorial Trophy as the BCHL’s Most Valuable Player.

“First off, it’s a humongous honour,” said Horcoff. “I grew up in British Columbia, playing all my minor hockey there, and played three years of junior hockey before leaving for college.”

After capturing the Fred Page Cup as champions of the BCHL in a 4-0 sweep of the Kelowna Packers in the final series, the 1986-87 Richmond Sockeyes went on to win the Centennial Cup, defeating the Humboldt Broncos 5-3 in the national championship game.

Other 2025 BCHHoF inductees include:

Dan Hamhuis (player)
Mike Penny (builder)
Larry Kwong (pioneer, player, builder)
Ted Hargreaves (builder)
1977-78 Kimberley Dynamiters (team)

The induction ceremony will take place on July 12 at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
