Pair of third period goals from Beck leads Chiefs past Merritt

The Langley Chiefs used home ice and four unanswered goals to avenge a Friday night loss to Merritt, topping the Centennials by a 6-3 score in the return leg of a weekend home-and-home series.

Merritt got on the board first when Colton Sobchak beat Chiefs starter Andrew Walsh just 1:20 into regulation. Langley responded before the end of the first period, however, as Marcus Watson and Kody Dhaliwal scored just 1:23 apart late in the frame to put the home team ahead.

The lead switch hands again in the second period, as the Centennials picked up goals from Derek Hills and Alexander MacMillan. But Langley took over from there, tying the game before the end of the middle frame on a Brandon Thompson effort and then exploding for a trio of third period goals.

Colton Beck scored twice in the final 20 minutes, bringing his goal output for the two-game series to five, while Jordan Sims netted a shorthanded marker. Walsh picked up the win with a 18-save performance.

The game marked the opener of a six-game homestand for the Chiefs, who will welcome the Westside Warriors on Thursday. Merritt, meanwhile, begins a four-game Vancouver Island road swing with a visit to Nanaimo on Wednesday.
