Six-point night by Hammond leads Caps to big win on road vs. Eagles

The Cowichan Valley Capitals obliterated their season high for goals in a game on Saturday night, matching their previous high of six in the second period alone en route to a road 9-5 win over the Surrey Eagles.

Jamus Lane put the Eagles out to a brief first period lead just 1:29 into regulation, but the Capitals replied with tallies from Jackson Garrett, Mike Hammond and Colten Derickson before intermission. The visitors then blew things open in the second, as Nick Anderson scored 39 seconds into the frame and Garrett, Hammond, Shayne Taker and Ryan Green — with a pair — followed suit.

The Eagles managed a pair of goals in the third period once the game was no longer in doubt. Adam Basford, Grant Toulmin, Chris Santiago and Richard Vandenhoek joined Lane on the scoresheet for the home side.

Hammond enjoyed a career night for the Capitals, scoring twice and adding four assists. Both Garrett and Anderson picked up four-point evenings for Cowichan Valley. Alex Peck picked up the win in net with a 31-save performance, while Mike Chan and Vinny Lessard shared time in the Surrey goal.

The Capitals round out a three-game weekend road trip on Sunday with a visit to Langley, while the Eagles will have a few days to regroup prior to a visit from the Prince George Spruce Kings on Wednesday.
