Smoke Eaters’ Patrik Martin commits to SFU

The Trail Smoke Eaters are pleased to announce that graduating forward Patrik Martin has accepted a scholarship to continue his hockey career at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C.

Martin served as an assistant captain in his third and final season with the Smoke Eaters while scoring five goals and adding 10 assists in 59 games. Over a 130-game career in Trail, the native of nearby Rossland scored 11 goals and 28 points and recorded 184 penalty minutes.

“Patrik is going to be a tremendous asset for the program at Simon Fraser,” Smoke Eaters head coach Jim Ingram says. “His work ethic is tremendous and his commitment to accountability — both to himself and his teammates — will make him a valuable member of their team. The entire Smoke Eaters organization wishes Patrik all the best as he moves forward with his academic and athletic future.”

Martin will join Simon Fraser, which plays in the seven-team British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League, in September in preparation for their 2009/10 season. SFU's preseason schedule includes a game against the Burnaby Express on September 4th.

“We’re very excited to have Patrik on board for the coming season,” says SFU head coach Mark Coletta. “He’s a hard-working, physical player who will stand up for his teammates and go to the tough areas. We’ll look to him to be a leader and set a solid example on and off the ice.”
